Cape Charles Community Trail

The Town of Cape Charles Community Trail, funded by a TEA-21 Grant, will link area residents and visitors to the town harbor, historic district, business district, beach, primary town park, and museum.   Cape Charles was laid out in 1884 to serve as the southern rail terminus along the eastern shore and a transfer point where barges and ferries completed the journey across the Bay to Norfolk.  The town that grew up around the harbor retains much of its architectural integrity.  Within the core town area the trail is approximately 4-miles long.  Its design is centered around the preservation and interpretation of the town’s historic character.  Design includes but is not limited to streetscape improvements, residential walkways, park open space, and beach access.  The town’s rich history, community patterns, and desire to meet the growing needs and desires of its citizens, are serving as the foundation for the development of the trail master plan.

The town has received two federal Transportation Enhancement grants to date, totaling $289,000.  A small portion of that funding went toward the development of the trail master plan.  The remaining funding is being utilized to design and construct the first phase of the trail, as prioritized through the master planning process.  The developed master plan has been utilized to successfully win an additional $466,000 in grant funding for additional phases.  Our services to the town include grant administration, reimbursement requests, and the preparation of various grant applications.
