Thalia Creek Greenway
Thalia Creek, a tributary to the Western Branch of the Lynnhaven River, adjoins much of the quickly developing Virginia Beach Town Center area.  The areas growing popularity for both commercial as well as residential uses is bringing the need for the development of a coordinated system of trails and open spaces to the forefront.  Land Studio worked with many citizens and stakeholders during the development of a Master Plan.  Individual stakeholder meetings, group meetings and large public workshops were all necessary to ensure the involvement of key individuals and build consensus for the project.  The Thalia Creek greenway network will link area residents, employers, and businesses to each other and to the open space opportunities along the creek corridor.  Key project goals included:

  • To open up a dialogue and build consensus for the development of the greenway with all the various stakeholders and public and private property owners (Various City Departments, VDOT, Virginia Beach Chesapeake Bay Board and private citizens)
  • To provide a network of trails and open space for exercise, transportation, recreation, and natural area viewing
  • To provide a tool for the enhanced development coordination as the area continues  to  grow  and  redevelop.
  • To develop a document that identifies phasing priorities and preliminary cost estimates.

The plan has been adopted by City Council and funds for its development are being sought.
